Discusfarm started out as an idea by myself
Jeff Young along with my brother, Jason, back in the early 90s. Growing
up we have always maintained several community tropical and marine fish
tanks. We enjoyed the ease of fresh water, but loved the color of
saltwater fish.
Several years after
college we noticed 6 fish in a tank at the local fish store and started
to ask questions. We were told they were discus and were fresh water fish.
The only problem was we were told they were hard to keep, you had to use
RO water, they get sick very easily, they probably wouldn't live very
long for the average hobbyist, and the store will not give any warranty
on these fish. Hmm, sounds like a challenge to me. They almost taunted
us to buy them. Not being the average hobbyist we gave it a go. Not realizing
at the time the quest had begun.
Well it was difficult. There were not
many references and most breeders kept water conditions and discus diet
top secret. The Internet was just starting and not much information was
on the web about discus. I joined a local Cichlid club in Chicago and
started communicating with local hobbyists and breeders. Unfortunately
I later moved to Los Angeles and had to start my hobby over again.
I waited a few years before starting over
and did research with my free time. What I found was most local pet stores
have C grade discus or culls imported from Asia they are trying to pass
off as discus with high prices if they even offer discus. Many fish are
sick, stunned, runts, and have diseases. This is like McDonalds trying
to say they sell steak. There are a few stores that have nice discus,
but these are too few.
This time again
with my brothers help we decided to take it to the next level. We didn't
want to start over as a hobbyist. We wanted to fill a void that exists.
It was time to start a commercial hatchery for hobbyists. The hatchery
would sell locally to tropical fish stores and direct to fellow hobbyists
providing only the highest quality, healthy discus at affordable prices.
Welcome to Discusfarm.us.
It is the goal of this hatchery to increase
awareness of discus fish locally and through the Internet. We will strive
to offer quality fish at affordable prices so local stores will quit importing
junk. Discusfarm will sell to and support all hobbyists who are interested
in discus.
Discusfarm breeds some discus varieties
it offers for sale but really imports most strains we offer. While we are
unable to have every strain available we are striving to grow and continually
looking to acquire more quality strains. This is a slow process for us
because it is not about quantity it is all about Quality.
The pics you see on our site are pics of
fish we offer for sale. These are representations of the actual fish. If
you like you may come to our hatchery and pick out your discus. Some
pictures are of adult discus that have reached their full color.
