Fry- 4-5 days old (less than 1")
We start by raising
brine shrimp. We feed them to the fry within 24 hours of hatching.
When the fry have
reached 4-5 days old we filter, fresh water rinse and collect the newly
hatched brine into a syringe and slowly squirt the brine out of the syringe
over the top of an adult discus with fry at its side. The fry will eagerly
accept the brine as their food and will slowly stop feeding off the slime
coats of the adult discus. Careful observation will show the brine in
the bellies of the fry. When they readily accept the brine as their food
source we transfer them into their own aquarium of 30-40 gallons. We will
continue feeding the fry six times daily until they reach 21 days old.
When the fry are
transferred into their own tank we will raise the PH level to 7.2-7.5
and sustain that level
Note: Water changes
are a necessity when feeding brine. After the fry have stopped feeding
it is important to siphon out the bottom of the tank to remove any uneaten
brine. The brine will build up quickly and foul the water. I have found
several small water changes work well or if you don't have time you can
do larger ones of about 70 percent per day. |
